Qatar's First World Cup

The Qatar national football team will play their first FIFA World Cup football match in 2022.

As hosts of the tournament, the national team automatically qualified for the World Cup - the first to do so in history. While the national team may not previously have qualified for the World Cup, they have won several other prominent regional and Asian tournaments. In 1992, 2004 and 2014, Qatar won the Arabian Gulf Cup. In 2006, they won the Gold medal in Football at the Asian Games. In 2014, they won the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Championships. More recently, the current team celebrated their win of the AFC Asian Cup (2019), beating four-time winners, Japan, in the final. Interestingly, they only conceded one goal during the tournament!
